Zoom! Teeth Whitening is a great (and affordable) way to brighten your smile. Philips (the manufacturer of Zoom) states that it is the #1 requested method of teeth whitening by patients, and we aren’t surprised. They even have an iPhone app to show you estimated results. We’ve covered the causes and treatment options for teeth whitening in our Knowledge Base, but due to the popularity of Zoom! Teeth Whitening we decided to dedicate a page to it. Read on to learn about this easy option for teeth whitening, and don’t miss our previous article on cheese and its benefits to teeth whitening also.

What is Zoom! Teeth Whitening?

Zoom! Teeth Whitening is a procedure done in your local dental office, usually by a dental assistant under the supervision of a dentist. Typically, whitening is done on your front (anterior) teeth. In most cases Zoom! Teeth Whitening takes about an hour, which is divided into four 15 minute sessions. Most patients experience a dramatic improvement in just one visit. Dental whitening is widely considered the safest cosmetic procedure available when done properly under the supervision of a dentist.

The Process

Once you decide on Zoom! Teeth Whitening, you will arrive at your scheduled appointment and the dental assistant will take impressions of your teeth to make the bleaching trays. Following the creation of the bleaching trays, your mouth will be kept open and light gauze and a liquid material (kind of like sunblock) will be applied to your gums and around your mouth. This will protect your soft tissue from the powerful light that is used in the bleaching process. If you feel your lips or gums tingle or burn make sure to alert your dental assistant, as it may be a sign of a burn.

Once your gums and lips are protected, a gel is applied to your teeth and you begin 15 minute intervals with a strong whitening light. Every 15 minutes the dental assistant will remove and replace the gel, re-position the light, and begin again until an hour has passed.

Is there any pain or discomfort?

Zoom! Teeth Whitening aims to be as pain and discomfort free as possible, but you may experience some slight sensitivity during the procedure. This usually occurs during the last half of the process, and it is completely normal. Many patients experience slight “electric” sensations on their teeth, and this usually continues after the procedure for a few hours. This is caused by the dehydration of your teeth during whitening. There is a slight fluid layer inside of your teeth and the bleach combined with intense light can cause this layer to dissolve. After the procedure and for the rest of the day your teeth will begin re-hydrating and you may feel “zings” in your teeth during the process.

After the Procedure

Your teeth can take up to 48 hours for your teeth to re-hydrate, and during this time you need to avoid colored liquids or foods. Stick to water and salad for your meals during the next two days, as anything such as coffee, tea, wine, or sauces can reduce the effectiveness of teeth whitening.
