All the activity of the holiday season may disrupt your everyday routine, but make sure to keep your mouth healthy.

“Holiday get-togethers tend to lead people to consume sugary treats and drink alcoholic beverages more than usual,” Dr. George Shepley, spokesman for the Academy of General Dentistry, says. “[Revelers] forget the most basic of oral hygiene tasks that can counteract the effects of sugary snacks and drinks,” he explains..

Red and white wine is highly acidic and can erode the enamel of your teeth, so try to avoid swishing the liquid in your mouth while drinking. Drinking water after a glass of wine is also a great way to keep acid off your teeth.

Cookies, candy canes, chocolate, and gingerbread houses are delicious, but the sugar in them will help the growth of bacteria, causing cavities and bad breath. While brushing and flossing after eating a sugary treat is the best way to clean your mouth, chewing sugarless gum or drinking water can increase saliva production and provide a rudimentary clean.

Grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw is a common side effect of holiday stress, and can result in chips in your teeth, headaches, and jaw pain.

“Finding ways to alleviate your anxiety can help, but it’s also important to see your dentist, who can recommend solutions like a custom night guard,” Shepley suggests. “Wearing one at night will prevent you from taking out the holiday stress on your teeth while you sleep.”
