The easiest way to keep a healthy smile is brushing twice a day, flossing, eating healthy foods, and keeping up with visits to your dentist’s office. Despite your best preventative efforts for dental health, there are still five common problems that people encounter.

1) Bad Breath

Using mouthwash or chewing gum can cover up bad breath, but these methods are not cures. Bad breath or Halitosis is one of the most common dental health issues, and dental health professionals agree that for most cases of frequent bad breath there is an underlying dental issue. Keeping up with brushing and flossing your teeth can combat the causes of bad breath.

2) Cavities

Cavities are a very common problem. When plaque combines with elements from your food it creates an acidic reaction and tooth decay occurs, eroding your tooth’s enamel. Avoiding sugar and sticking with healthy food can minimize the risk of tooth decay. If you are experiencing tooth pain or achy feelings, especially after consuming sweet, hot, or cold foods and drinks, it’s time to contact your dentist.

3) Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection in the periodontal (gum) tissue surrounding your teeth, and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The early stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, can usually be treated easily. Advanced stages of gum disease, or periodontitis, may require surgery to correct. If you have bright or inflamed gums, contact your dentist, as gum disease has been clinically linked to heart attacks and stroke.

4) Mouth Sores

Canker sores, cold sores, ulcers, fever blisters, and thrush are not bothersome and uncomfortable, they can be signs of a more serious problem. Mouth sores that remain for over two weeks can be indicative of a more serious dental problem.

5) Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is a serious dental disease which effects millions of people world-wide and hundreds of thousands of new cases are diagnosed every year. Most oral cancers can quickly spread through your mouth. Most cases of oral cancer are related to the use of smoking, tobacco, and alcohol. Human papillomavirus infection (HPV), irritation of your gum tissue (such as that cause by dentures or a filling), and poor dental hygiene have also been linked to the onset of oral cancer. Studies show that men are twice as likely as women to get oral cancer.

This very serious dental disease can affect the mouth, lips, and/or throat, but thanks to early diagnosis and treatment by your dentist it is highly curable with very positive recovery chances.
